Blackjack Book Reviews

There are hundreds if not thousands of blackjack books ranging in usefulness from very poor to very good. On this page I give you my reviews of books about blackjack that I have read. Some blackjack books are very good for beginning players but wouldn't be any good for an advanced player, and many are just the opposite. For example, Blackjack Attack by Don Schlesinger (review below) will be a total waste of time for a new blackjack player but could be worth millions to an experienced advantage player. As I read more blackjack books I will add more blackjack book reviews to this page.

Blackbelt in Blackjack - Arnold Snyder

Blackbelt in Blackjack by Arnold Snyder is not for the complete beginning blackjack player, but you should read it once you understand the game and basic strategy. It is one of my personal favorite blackjack books, if not the favorite. Arnold Snyder is in the blackjack hall of fame and has been an advantage player for many years. He used to publish a quarterly magazine for blackjack professionals called Blackjack Forum. The Blackbelt in Blackjack book should be in every blackjack players library.

The book covers basic strategy and how to play, but the real value is in the discussion of different blackjack counting systems, He discusses the red seven count, hi lo lite, true count, zen count and phony systems. Snyder also covers table conditions, bankroll requirements and management, professional betting strategies, the law, team play and shuffle tracking.

Beat the Dealer - Edward O Thorp

Beat the Dealer by Edward O. Thorp was the first widely available book explaining how blackjack could be beaten by counting cards. It is THE blackjack book and has well over a million copies in print. Beat the Dealer was first published in the early sixties and is still in print. The card counting strategies in it are a bit outdated, in that there are many better blackjack systems now available, but to get a solid understanding of card counting this is the book you should start with.

This blackjack book was responsible for a great rush of panic by the casinos and they changed the rules of the blackjack games for a short while after it came out. The new rules were so bad that no one played and they had to change back. The book talks mostly about beating single deck blackjack games and to be honest, very little of what it covers is still usable. But you should still read it to understand how blackjack systems work.

Bringing Down the House - Ben Mezrich

Bringing Down the House by Ben Mizrich is a book about how a blackjack team of MIT students developed and used blackjack team play to win millions of dollars from the blackjack tables around the world. It is based on a true story but some of the information in it has been sensationalized according to research I have done about the book.

It won't teach you how to play blackjack, but it is a fun and interesting read. Bringing Down the House also gives you an idea of how blackjack team play works. The movie 21 starring Kevin Spacey was based on this book, however, it sensationalized the events even more than the book and appears to only loosely be based on fact.

Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution - Frank Scoblete

Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution by Frank Scoblete introduces a very easy blackjack card counting system that the author claims will give the player a small edge over the casino in the long run. I have not tested this system but it is a great way to start if you want to learn how to count cards. You can learn this system and play it correctly in just a few days.

Frank Scoblete is a well known gambling author and instructor. He is probably most known for his Golden Touch Craps classes and material. I recommend this blackjack book for anyone who wants to learn how to count cards. It is the easiest system I have seen. However, if you already know a different system like red sevens or hi lo, this book will not help you at all. The more advanced systems will give you a better edge at the blackjack tables.

Blackjack Attack - Don Schlesinger

Blackjack Attack by Don Schlesinger is a monster blackjack book that will make your head swim unless you are already an established advantage blackjack player. This is not to say that this isn't one of the best blackjack books in print. It is an awesome blackjack book.

I compare this book to the Theory of Poker by Sklansky. I read the Theory of Poker before reading many poker books and it just confused me. Once I became a good poker player and read a ton of other poker books, I read it again and it helped my game a lot. Blackjack Attack is the same way. As a new blackjack player, you should not read it. But as you gain experience and learn a system, it is a must read.

Million Dollar Blackjack - Ken Uston

Million Dollar Blackjack by Ken Uston was released in the early eighties, but is one of the best books available discussing team blackjack play. It discusses the problems with forming and running a blackjack team, many of the challenges blackjack teams run into, bankroll considerations, player and investor compensation and many advanced team blackjack techniques.

Today's professional blackjack teams can not operate exactly as the teams Uston talks about did, but you can still learn as much about blackjack team play from this book as you can anywhere else. It builds a solid foundation of blackjack team play knowledge.

How to Detect Casino Cheating at Blackjack - Bill Zender

How to Detect Casino Cheating at Blackjack by Bill Zender does not teach you how to play blackjack but it does teach you how to watch for casinos or casino personnel who may be cheating. If you are a recreational and / or low stakes blackjack player, this type of information about casino cheating is not that important. But as you start playing for higher stakes or as a professional blackjack player, you need to know how you can be cheated so you can avoid crooked blackjack games. This book does an excellent job of showing you what to be aware of at the blackjack table.
